WHAT ARE HOPI EAR CANDLES?

Thermal Auricular Therapy (Hopi Ear Candles) is a deeply relaxing, calming and soothing treatment offering real and marked benefits for many problems and conditions associated with the head, ear, nose and throat areas. Ear Candles are used to carry out this therapy. The treatment is non-invasive and is thought to be thousands of years old.

Benefits are not just gained during the treatment (sometimes treatment may spontaneously cause freer nasal breathing and improved sense of smell, even when the nose was blocked before treatment). Post-treatment the action of the essential oils and energy from the candles continue to work.

Hopi Ear Candles are named after the Native American tribe of Arizona who first introduced this therapy to the west. The Hopi Nation are renowned for their extensive knowledge of ancient healing arts and their spiritual lifestyle. Translated, "Hopi" means "peaceful".

Hopi Ear Candles are hollow tubes made from cotton with various ingredients added which have been used for centuries for their specific healing qualities. These include Beeswax, Honey, St John's Wort, Sage, Chamomile and Beta Carotene/Vitamin A. The candles contain a filter which will protect the ear canal from any wax or excessive herbal powder residue dropping into the ear.

You will be asked to lie comfortably on a couch. The ear candle is lit and then gently placed into one of your ears. It is held in a vertical position. My hands will keep the candle steady. You will then experience a pleasant crackling sound and a warm comfortable feeling as the candle burns. The candle is allowed to burn down until it reaches a specific marker indicated on its side, and then it is taken away while you lie there for a few moments. The process is then repeated on your other ear.

During treatment impurities are drawn out of the ear into the candle and either burned away or collected in the filter. Both ears must be treated.

A soothing facial massage is performed afterwards, draining the sinuses and reinforcing lymph action and blood flow and promoting complete relaxation.

When the treatment is over you will be shown the contents of the candles, and recommendations for further treatments will be made as a result of the candle contents.   The session lasts approximately up to an hour.

When lit, the ear candles have a slight sucking action often referred to as the chimney principle, drawing any impurities to the surface where they can be gently removed. The rising air inside the ear sets up a vibration that gently massages the eardrum and promotes drainage of the sinuses. The flow of air within the candle creates a circulation of concentrated vapour. This has a soothing and calming effect. The locally applied warmth stimulates and invigorates the local circulation and reinforces the flow of lymph.
