Reflexology dates backs to Ancient Egypt, Greece and China and was also used by Native Americans. It is a form of holistic treatment based on the principle that the anatomy of the body is reflected in miniature in reflex zones on the soles of the feet and also on the hands. By using specific techniques of holds and pressures on these regions, healing is both initiated and accelerated in the corresponding area of the body. Reflexology can bring about the same sensations of relaxation and restfulness that a full body massage can produce, and therefore it can be most useful in the treatment of stress - it encourages the body to heal itself and gets the body's systems to work in unison. On each foot and hand are areas known as reflex points, which correspond to each gland and structure in the body. The hands and feet have the same reflex points. When these points are stimulated, benefits can be felt in the area of the body that is being worked on.
WHAT IS VERTICAL REFLEXOLOGY
Vertical Reflexology is a form of the traditional reflexology already mentioned, but it uses pressure on the top of the foot, not the sole. This makes it very useful for patients who find it easier to sit or stand than to lie down, and treatment typically takes only a few minutes whilst bringing deeper and more intense healing. Points which are stimulated during Vertical Reflexology may respond more quickly than in traditional reflexology. This form of reflexology is especially helpful for orthopaedic conditions. It is often given as part of a full or shortened conventional reflexology treatment, but can also be used alone as a quick refresher treatment. GENERAL
While many people use reflexology as a way of relaxing the mind and body and counteracting stress, at the same time many doctors and consultants and other health care professionals recognise reflexology as a well established, respected and effective therapy.
BENEFITS FROM REFLEXOLOGY
Reflexology brings relief to a huge range of acute and chronic conditions. Most people can benefit from a reflexology treatment and there is no minimum or maximum age limit. Conditions that can benefit from reflexology are limitless, varying from PMT, asthma, sinusitis, stress and pains (especially joint pains), to digestive disorders, tinnitus and insomnia. It also helps to break down crystalline deposits, remove blockages in nerve and energetic pathway, improves blood supply and aids detoxification.
After injury, stress, illness or disease the body is imbalanced. Reflexology restores balance and harmony to the body by clearing congested reflexes, and it:
balances the body's systems;
induces deep relaxation;
aids elimination;
revitalises energy; and
cleanses the body of toxins and impurities.
After you have completed a course of treatment for a specific condition, many people find it beneficial to continue with regular treatments in order to maintain health and well-being.
