What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a fast, effective and powerful tool for lasting change.  Hypnosis is a natural state, comparable to that of day-dreaming.  It can bring about a feeling of heightened awareness and calm.  Contrary to what stage shows have you believe, you are in complete control at all times, and you can only accept suggestions that are in accord with your own values.  It is a form of therapy combining trance induction of hypnosis with individualised techniques which I have at my disposal.  Hypnotherapy encompasses an holistic approach to health and healing and the total person's well-being.  It is a dramatic invervention system that reshapes the client's feelings of competence and capability.  During hypnotherapy sessions it is possible to discover hidden memories, latent creativity, new insights, feelings of competenence, release of fears or release of repressed emotions.

Through the use of hypnotherapy and creative visualisation you can create a positive present by re-creating the past.  Our present experiences are influenced by past memories (fixed ideas) contained in our subconcious mind.  When we change the emotional remembrance of these events, we also change our current attitudes, beliefs and motivations towards our present reality.  We can manifest a creative and successful present and future by reprogramming the past stored in our subconscious minds.  As children we could not choose the belief structure or conditioning we received from our parents, peers and environment.  As adults we can reprogram or rewrite our past scripts and the roles being played in the present.  Re-creation is a dynamic therapy process which works simply and gently to help one manifest a limitless future.

"Research shows that there is more scientific evidence for hypnotherapy than any other complementary therapy ..... by using hypnosis people can perform prodigious feats of willpower and self healing"  The Health Education Authority.

Hypnotherapy can be successful where other therapies are not.  It can enable you to make the permanent changes you want to make by getting rid of inappropriate response patterns that are causing your anxiety.

How Do I Become Hypnotised?

Using progressive relaxation techniques, a trance-like state similar to day-dreaming is entered into.  It's very relaxing and enjoyable, and it's the best working state to enable me to talk directly to your subconscious mind.

What Does Hypnotherapy Feel Like?

This is a question that many people ask me.  The short answer is that you will think it is perfectly normal!  Hypnosis is a natural brain state that we are in everyday while we are day dreaming, driving, reading a book or watching TV.  You have probably been hypnotised many times throughout your life.  Have you ever driven to work and realised you have almost no recall of the journey?  Sat on a bus and day-dreamed your way through traffic?  To most people hypnosis is a similar state of mind.  Despite what you may see on TV or at stage shows, people under hypnosis know exactly what they are doing.

In the hectic world in which we live increasingly people do not have the time or make the time to relax.  During a hypnotherapy session you will become deeply relaxed, and will feel much better by the end of each session.

I use hypnosis to effect change.  In this relaxed state your subconscious mind is able to accept specific suggestions and positive messages that have a therapeutic value.

Does a Person Give Up Control When Hypnotised?

Do you give up control of your mind during a film?  When was the last time you got so involved during a film or TV programme that you actually felt emotion?  You were literally in a hypnotic trance, although you still had the power to emerge from that state if desired.  Your mind may be guided by a film, TV programme, self-hypnosis CD or a hypnotherapist, but YOU still have the power to resist.  All hypnosis is self-hypnosis.  I am the facilitator to help you reach your goals.

Is it Safe?

Yes, totally.  It is a completely natural brain state.  In fact we go into a trance-like state about seven or eight times a day.  No one can be hypnotised against their will, and any suggestions made whilst under hypnosis can be rejected if they are not wanted or inappropriate.

What Can Hypnotherapy Help With?

Hypnotherapy can have a positive impact with many different areas.  The following lists just some of them.  If you do not find your condition listed here and you are wondering if hypnotherapy can help, please ask me.  Hypnotherapy is very flexible and though it does have it's limits, it can often be tailored to address many problems:

  • Relief from stress, tension and anxiety - a group of disorders that are becoming increasingly common in a society focussed on achievement.
  • Breaking unwanted habits such as smoking, eating, bedwetting, nailbiting, and stuttering.  Habits are things that we learn, and can serve a useful purpose in some way, even if we don't know why.  As they are things that we learn, we can unlearn them.  Hypnotherapy deals directly with the unconscious mind to help alter these habits to ones that are more constructive and desireable.
  • Freedom from phobias, obsessive compulsive behaviours, emotional problems, insomnia and inhibitions.
  • Obtaining relief from symptoms such as asthma, migraines and digestive conditions which can all be linked to stress - by lowering stress and anxiety levels relief from these symptoms can sometimes be found.
  • Regarding pregnancy and fertility, it can help support women and couples through their journey.
  • Food phobias.
  • Increased performance in work, study and sport.
  • Improving concentration and memory.
  • Boosting self-confidence.
  • Addiction of any kind.
  • Bruxism (Teeth Grinding).
  • Sexual difficulties.
  • Blushing.

Tools that I Can Use During A Session

Suggestion Therapy - uses suggestions to promote and reinforce positive messages when dealing with confidence building, ego strengthening, stopping smoking, exam nerves etc.

Solution Based Therapy - I would use this for goal achievement, changing perspectives and identifying causes and solutions.  It is also effective for the treatment of fears, phobias, weight loss, anxiety, depression and much more.

Analytical Therapy and Regression Therapy - this works on the basis that every symptom has a cause.  It helps us to re-evaluate the past.  By effectively reliving certain events in a safe environment, we can allow ourselves to re-assess situations that have affected our psyche, and these can then be re-evaluated in an adult light.

Other Psychotherapeutic Techniques - these include NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

All of my sessions are client-centred, and any therapeutic approach is tailored entirely to your needs and wishes.  Depending on what outcome is required I may use all or just some of the above types of therapies.  Each session is unique and dependent on your needs.

How Many Sessions Will It Take?

The number of sessions required varies and is dependent on the individual's needs and the presenting problem.  This will be assessed during the free consultation, but as a guideline a phobia, for example, will usually take about three sessions.  Smoking is undertaken in one session lasting up to two hours.

The Initial Free Consultation

It is advisable, except where smoking therapy is concerned, to have a free consultation to discuss the problem and to decide on the method of treatment.  This usually takes up to an hour and a half, and is completely confidential.

How Much Does it Cost?

Sessions cost £50 (£35 concessions) and last up to an hour (inclusive of a relaxation CD), with the exception of smoking which is completed in one session lasting up to two hours which costs £100 (again inclusive of a relaxation CD).
